Tom Miller was unit publicist on the 1971 "Shaft," Blow Out," "The Cotton Club," and "Mikey and Nicky." Previously he worked as staff publicist at Embassy Pictures ("The Graduate" and "The Producers") and at American International Pictures ("Wild in the Street" the the Vincent Price/Edgar Allen Poe movies). He was hired by MGM as unit publicist after he wrote a letter in rebuttal to "New York Times" critic Renata Adler's negative review of "2001: A Space Odyssey," the first favorable comments about the Kubrick film to appear in print. His novels, published under the name Tom Canford, include "Boy at Sea," "The Curse of Vilma Valentine," and "Ghost Guitars." The last two drew heavily on his knowledge of the film industry and film history. Two memoirs written by Miller were published posthumously in 2013: "A Fever of the Mad, A Movie Publicist Works with Francis Coppola, Elaine May, John Cassavetes, Peter Falk, and Richard Gere and Survives to Tell the Tale!" and "Baker's Daughter, Miller's Son, A Memoir of the Famly of Tom Miller and Norma Miller." In 2008 a large collection of writings, photographs, and other material from his years as a publicist was donated to the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
